7QT: I Noah guy with a brilliant idea regarding resurrection rolls

1 - There's a really funny story for how I found this song. Someone, somewhere commented about the singing nun from the Italian version of The Voice, referencing "The Singing Nun" who sang the song "Dominique." My mom would sometimes sing that song because she remembered it from her childhood and so when the commenter mentioned that The Singing Nun committed suicide my curiosity got the best of me. While searching for her Wikipedia page I first read the Wikipedia page for the song "Dominique" where I saw a note about Spike Jones recording a version of the song with "When the Saints." So the whole story about Sister was pretty sad and I said a couple of prayers for her soul.
But I'm really loving this new song.

2 - I am still really hoping to see the movie Noah. I know there's a lot of people up in arms about it  but I reeeeealllly appreciated Steven Greydanus' review and commentary on the film. If you're thinking about seeing the movie but wondering if it's worth your time and money do read his article.

3 - I think the Peeps company should make little marshmallow Jesuses for the sole purpose of Resurrection rolls. I guess that's actually a bad idea because all kinds of horrible things could happen but they would be GREAT for Easter morning.

4 - I have a new post up at Ignitum Today: Music you should be listening to: an interview with the lead singer of The Hope and Justin Band.

5 -  Does anyone else find this hilarious?

6 - I should be working on something else right now. Oops. Time to be responsible.

7 - Jennifer, thank you for hosting!

Seven Quick Takes: Cake, Millenials, Squash, and Faree Pris

1 - My favorite Cake song ever!

2 - I had the super cool opportunity to interview Simcha Fisher about her book The Sinner's Guide to Natural Family Planning for Ignitum Today. You can read it here if you're interested.

3 - I saw a quiz on Facebook yesterday - How Millennial Are You? It turns out that a lot of my friends, even those who are Millennials are more like Gen Xers. I, on the other hand, scored a 12 putting me right over the Silent generation's line into Baby Boomer. If you take the quiz tell me what you get - it's fun. And it's super short!

4 - The quiz reminded me of a time I was at a Theology on Tap a few years ago. The speaker asked for a show of hands of everyone born in 1982 or after. All the Millenials around me raised their hands. Then he asked for a show of hands for everyone born in 1981 or before. I was the only one who raised my hand. I was like 27 years old and suddenly I felt really old.

5 - A local pumpkin farmer donated a huge amount of pumpkins and gourds for our parish's All Saints' party. He also gave me a few for cooking including this grandaddy of a squash.
Here it is with my coffee cup to give you some perspective.
I was surprised at how easy it was to cut up, I was pretty sure I'd be breaking a knife judging by its size. But it was super easy to cut and clean and bake. I pureed it and now I have all kinds of squash ready to be made into soup and baked into pie and....
and I don't know... is there anything else I can do with it?
Because I got a lot of it.

6 - I dropped the ball on Halloween because I didn't get a picture of the kids in their costumes. What I'm really disappointed by is that I didn't get a picture of them in their soaking wet costumes. Literally, we were dripping wet.
But L's got my back because she wrote a book at school about Halloween night.
She can spell her name - I don't know why it's messed up here.
It says, "I was a fairy princess."
Action shot of the trick or treating. She left out the pouring rain and the cold wind but it was there in real life.

7 - And on a final note, I would just like to say that I hate selling a house.

Thanks, Jen, for hosting!

Seven Quick Takes

1 - I'm going through a little Matchbox Twenty phase right now. It's fun.

2 - My latest at Ignitum Today: Pride and Postpartum Depression.

3 - Today we had beautiful fall weather and so the kids and I went to the park after Mass. Then, during quiet time, I painted my nails a dark purple. The boys' birthday party is tomorrow otherwise I would have gotten out the fall decorations.

4 - Speaking of fallish things... I'm helping organize the All Hallow's Eve party at my parish. I'm really trying to create something that has structure for the kids and is a good marriage of the secular Halloween and the Catholic All Hallow's Eve. I'm excited for the decorations, games, sneaky they-don't-know-they're-learning-because-it's-fun catechizing, and the costumes. I've started a Pinterest board and I'll be happily adding to it in the coming weeks. Here's a sneak peak:
pretzel sticks + mini marshmallows + white chocolate = RELICS! Get it?!

5 - Honestly, I started these 7QT last week and never got the chance to finish them... until a week later...

6 - And now poor JF is sick and I'm exhausted and Travis is going out of town tomorrow for his Masters class. So I got nothing...

7 - Except for this story:
L: Mommy, does JP drink regular milk or soy milk?
Me: Actually, he drinks human breastmilk, which is neither regular (2%) milk nor soy milk.
L: What do you mean?
Me: Well, regular milk is actually cow's milk, it comes from a cow. Soy milk is made from the soybeans that grown in the fields around us. But JP drinks milk from my breast - not from cows or soybeans but human breastmilk.
L: Ummmm... okay... So does JP drink regular milk or soy milk?
Me: He drinks regular milk.

Seven Quick Takes

1 - So there was this period in my life when I listened to the Maccabeats' cover of Matisyahu's "Miracle" just about every day, over and over again. It just makes me happy. I don't know what I was looking for when I found the above video but I thought it was really clever.

2 - Here's some highlights from conversations we had with the doctors and nurses who cared for JP in the hospital:

Nurse: "You're the mom who delivered intact! You're famous around here! We are in awe."
Me: It's nice to be famous somewhere.

Me: We're former NICU parents.
Doctor: Oh crap. I mean, that's too bad.
Nurse: You know just enough to be dangerous.

Nurse: JP's been waiting for you. You're the only one who can truly make him happy.
Me: Well, you probably don't lactate.

Nurse: He doesn't like being under the billi lights. He wants to be swaddled and if he's not he just screams and flails his arms.
Me: You should bind him with Syran Wrap.
Nurses: That's just what the doctor said!
Me: We could call it the Engstrom-Cusack Wrap. It'll become a thing that all the nurseries do.
Doctor: This is how change happens: intelligent people sharing ideas.
Nurse: He'd be a sweaty mess!
Me: He's been in water for nine months, maybe he'll like it.

3 - I have a new post up over at Ignitum Today called "It's okay to enjoy pop culture. I promise." It's a response to Bad Catholic Marc Barnes' ardent desire for us to not like "Call Me Maybe".  Go read it and tell me what you think.

4 - Yesterday Katie and her sister came over. Her sister is building up her photography portfolio and asked if she could do some newborn and family pictures. Because it's super hot we didn't go outside (because I'm a wuss) so we were set up in the dining room. I'm super excited to see the pics, especially based on this sneak peek:

5 - Our lawn mower is having issues. I'm hoping one day a neighbor will walk over with his push mower and tell Travis, "Here. You can use this, just fill it back up with gas when you're done."

6 - Travis and I recently rented the movie Robot & Frank. It was really quite sweet and has a wonderful twist at the end - neither one of us saw it coming! There's some language, and the whole film is about a cat burglar, but nothing too bad and I think it's PG-13 rating is appropriate. All that to say, if you're looking for a light movie for tonight I suggest it.

7 - Best part of the day.

7 quick takes

1 - Here's a little Kip Moore to help satisfy my country cravings. I wonder what Senator McCain thinks of this song and the obvious reference to his daughter?

2 - Speaking of country music - did you see the season finale for Nashville?! I was all like, "Deacon - nuh-uh - no you didn't!" and then I was all like, "Oh Gunnar! What are you doin?" and then at the end, watching Rayna and Deacon in the truck I was, "Well... we all know where this is going...."

3- You'll see under my little "Follow Me" that I have a new Facebook icon. Lately I've gotten friend requests from wonderful people who read my blog. Before Lent I actually felt called to clean up my FB friends and invest more in the people I actually know, love, and whose friendships I want to invest in. I deleted over 150 "friends," trying to keep my list to people I actually know in real life or those I know through the internet because we communicate on Twitter, in comboxes, via email, etc. If my husband knows who you are through a small explanation (Kaitlin, she has a blog but she's also Alisha's friend and she supported us when JF was in the NICU.) then we can be Facebook friends.

So if you've sent me a Facebook request and I didn't accept please don't think I'm a huge jerk! I'm trying to manage my life, which is in desperate need of some moderation. Have pity and don't feel bad! And then go like my page on Facebook and interact with me there, if you like.

I'd love it.

4 - Resa's birthday party is tomorrow morning. I planned it for 9-11am so she'd be awake but right now that seems really dumb. I need to dust, sweep, bake and decorate cupcakes, make fruit salad, blow up balloons and clean the bathroom in the next 26 hours. And this person I'm growing is zapping all my energy. That girl better have the best day of her life tomorrow.
Her birthday party invite, hanging out on the fridge with Fulton Sheen.
5 - Related to the birthday party: If you rsvp when the invitation says, "RSVP regrets" then I love you and think you're the best, kindest, most considerate person ever. Last night, on our way to the store for food and paper products I told Travis, "Besides your parents and siblings, my parents, siblings and grandparents, and Resa's godparents we could have anywhere from 0 to 17 additional people coming." That's a big range, people.

6 - New post at Ignitum Today; it's called Sex Ed and Men and the Marriage Bed. I used an image of a knight's armor - I don't know if it works but I felt weird using some stock photo of a smiling or sad couple curled up on the bed or standing at the altar or going on a rosary walk or something.

7 - Have a wonderful weekend. God bless the souls of those who have died in the line of duty and God bless their families, too.

PS - Thanks to Jen for hosting and Congrats on your book deal with Ignatius Press!

7 Quick Takes

1 - I know a lot of people are typing really sweet, tear-jerking, gratitude-filled notes about Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.  But all I can give you is this: Sara Bareilles singing and dancing in a Mexican grocery store, summing up a lot of my feelings for Papa Bene.

Goodbye
Should be sayin' that to you by now, shouldn't I?
Layin' down the law that I live by,
Though maybe next time
...
And I tell myself to let the story end,
My heart will rest in someone else's hand
My 'why not me?' philosophy began,
And I say

Ooh, how'm I gonna get over you?
I'll be alright, just not tonight
Someday, oh I wish you'd want me to stay
I'll be alright, just not tonight,
Someday

2 - Here's something I think most of us in the world rightly did not know:
“This Pope has removed two or three bishops per month throughout the world because either the accounts in their dioceses were a mess or their discipline was a disaster,”
You can read more at EWTN.
One of my kids took this picture without me knowing.  It's the crucifix that hangs in our playroom; my mom gave it to me years ago.

3 - Some of us have wondered how the the changing of the popes has or will effect Venerable Sheen's cause for canonization.  A lot of us - myself included - were hopeful that because Pope Benedict personally knew and loved Fulton Sheen we would see him beatified and then canonized a little more quickly than some others.  (Popes can play favorite, right?)  Obviously my family is very curious because my son JF's healing has been submitted for Ven. Sheen's beatification.  (Moms can be biased, right?)  Anyways - all this to say - here's a nice article from The Catholic Post discussing this very question.

“I have spoken to our leaders in Rome -- Dr. Andrea Ambrosi, our postulator, and formally to Msgr. Jason Gray, who works in the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Even now, to this day, the work of the Roman Curia is continuing,” said Msgr. Stanley Deptula, executive director of the Archbishop Fulton John Sheen Foundation.
Read the rest here.

4 - Not related to the pope, I've been growing green onions.  Amazing!  I probably saw on Pinterest that one should not toss out green onions but stick them in a glass of water, put them by a window, and enjoy them over and over again.  And so I did, and it's working, and look at me saving $.50 every month!

5 - After this past Sunday's What I Wore Sunday post I had this awesome idea to put up pictures of myself from when I was thin but thought I was fat but actually was fairly hot.  And it would be my own little version of "What I Wish I Wore Sunday".  Maybe I'd even throw in a "But This Is What I Wore Instead".  I don't want to come across as a smart alec or to be mocking the WIWS link-up because I love that link up and the ladies who put it on for us each week.

Other variances I've thought of include: WIWTTOBGYNO because I looked really cute for my first midwife appointment and WIWTTGS because, again, I looked super cute at the grocery store.  I guess what I want is for me to post pictures of myself looking good and have women from all over the country leave affirming comments.

6 - Let's celebrate all things papist, shall we? (My latest post at Ignitum Today.)

7 - Quote from Ben, age 3, after a ginormous belch in the Target snack are. "This soda is burpy."
Actually taken at McDonald's and for some reason he wanted to pose with a knife.
I can't end with a picture of my son and a plastic knife.  So let me offer you some cute pictures of my other kids.

7 quick takes

1 - I'm doing another choose your song week.  You can have Sufjan Stevens "Holy Holy Holy" or The Civil Wars singing "Billie Jean".  Enjoy!

2 - Waaaay back in November I did a phone interview with Audrey Assad for Ignitum Today.  It was really neat to speak with her - I especially loved the parts where she talked about redemptive suffering and Anna Karenina.  Here's the article if you're interested: An Interview with Singer-Songwriter Audrey Assad.

3 - This week has been a hard one for me emotionally.  I know a lot of you are already praying for Jen, who is in the hospital with blood clots in her lungs, and her unborn son.  I've also been praying for a relative whose father unexpectedly died and some friends who are suffering.  Ora pro nobis.

4 - On a lighter note the Christmas tree came down a little early for our house.  It was so dry that the ornaments were sliding off the branches and there were pine needles everywhere.  It's sitting on our front porch, which is far as I would carry it.  The other Christmas decorations are still out but I must admit, while I miss the lights I'm happy that our home feels open and less cluttered again.

5 - I've done a horrible job at preparing the kids for Epiphany.  Awhile ago Arwen Mosher told me via Twitter that at their home the kids' leave hay or lettuce in their shoes at night and then the Wise Men come, feed the lettuce to their camels, and leave little gifts for the kiddos.  Travis and I really liked that idea and I bought some markers and toothbrushes to leave in the shoes.  But beyond the basic Christmas story and reading one book I haven't done much to build it up for the kids and teach them about the Wise Men, the gifts, etc.

6 - I've also been slacking at homeschool.  I wanted to start "second semester" with the letter M but we took off too much time before Christmas to get that done.  So yesterday I crammed the letter J and K together in one day (as opposed to each letter getting two days in their own week).  And to make up for my lackluster approach to Epiphany I taught the kids that K stood for Three Kings instead the King of Kings - Jesus Christ.  We made crowns.  They liked it.  It's preschool, for Pete's sake, so I'm not too worried.  Right?

7 - Earlier this week I called my old friend Sr. Marie Noelle.  She was my best friend in college, joined the Nashville Dominicans after graduation, and is now missioned to a school less than two hours away.  She invited me to come up and spend the day with her and I jumped at the chance.  Resa and I arrived just after 10am and we stayed through Vespers.  It was the first time I was able to hang out with her all day long, all by myself since she left for Nashville in over eight years.   I was able to visit with a couple of her sisters, see her classroom, have lunch, and talk about movies.  It really was a wonderful day and I'm so glad we were able to make it happen.

7 Quick Takes

1 - If you haven't watched this yet, please do.  Dwija posted it first and I'm so glad she did.  I've watched this over and over again since Tuesday.  It's a bit silly and fun, and it's supposed to be because our Catholic faith is fun and we should be lighthearted! - but it makes me choke up every time I watch it.  All I can think is that if I didn't believe in God I would want to because of the hope and promise in JPII's words.

2 - An Obama-loving friend of mine wrote this on Facebook, "To all of my red friends, be not afraid, we come in peace."  I wanted to comment, "Oh thank God!  I hope that means you will no longer expect me to pay for free abortifacients."  But I figured that no matter how sincere those words of mine are - truly without a bit of sarcasm - she and all her friends would probably think I was just picking a fight and being dumb.  So I didn't.  Maybe that makes me a coward but then I read what Kaitlin said and I realized that she nailed what I'm thinking and it's something I don't think my FB friend can understand:

I fear that I'm inadequate to raise children who are capable of withstanding the assaults that are ahead. Can I truly raise martyrs? Am I even strong enough to be a martyr myself? Maybe not to death, but to jail? Or to joblessness? What will I be asked to sacrifice for my faith? And I'm sure some will read this and think I'm being melodramatic and that it can't possibly come to that. I hope you're right. But I believe you're wrong. It's already happening.

3 - I have tried to focus on HOPE this week.  Not Obama's hope, which Bob Rice perfectly described as "optimism based on the human spirit; [while] our hope is rooted in Jesus Christ and in His saving power."  You should read Marie's post on Hope.  It's a great summary, to which I would add,
"In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world!" -John 16:33
4 - THE REST OF THESE QUICK TAKES ARE NOT RELATED TO THE ELECTION!  YIPPEE!

5 - Here's my latest post at Ignitum Today.  It's a review of The Little Way of Advent: Meditations in the Spirit of St. ThereseIf you're looking for a good book to help you keep Advent I recommend this one.  I really liked it and look forward to slowly reading it and praying in a few weeks.

6 - My cousin Darcy sent this picture to me.  I was really touched that she even thought of me and I wanted to share it, especially in light of my post "People at the Grocery Store Think I Have too Many Kids."

7 - We've recently started popping our popcorn on the stove.  Occasionally I'll still use the air popper, but popcorn on the stove tastes so amazing that I don't know if I will ever crave microwave popcorn again.  The oil flavors it so butter isn't even needed, just a little salt.  You can find the recipe I use on my Pinterest board, Food I Gotta Make.

Halloween in our home

Somewhere between the occult and harvest parties lies what Halloween could and should be.

I used to think that I had to keep all ghosts, witches, and monsters out of Halloween, no matter how cutesy. I don’t want to foster in my children an interest in the occult and I thought that keeping those things (things I loved before I had kids) out of our home was the best way to do it. Scary jack-o-lanterns and anything that was too creepy had to go. But then I realized that I was being unrealistic; my kids are going to see those images anyways and I so I needed to develop a plan for us to be in the world but not of it.

Now of course witchcraft, satan, voodoo, and creepy/mean jokes are bad. But it’s not necessarily good to completely remove the topic of death, which is what happens with a harvest party - no more skulls, ghosts, or graveyards, just straw bales and caramel apples. I understand being careful so as to not celebrate evil. I totally agree that in our culture Halloween is often a glorification of the unholy. But we shouldn’t sanitize the holiday so much that we remove reality. As I see it, Halloween offers us the opportunity to openly discuss death and evil - two subjects most Americans ignore as best they can.

So if my kids and I see tombstones or a ghost (like the giant, blow-up one holding bags of candy and popping out of a pumpkin at our local grocery store) we can talk about how people die, our bodies are buried, and our souls go to Heaven to be with Jesus. We can discuss how we should pray for the souls of the dead. We can memorize and recite as a family, “Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual Light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.” This, of course, is especially appropriate since Halloween directly precedes All Saints Day and All Souls Day. And as my children age (my oldest is only 3) all of these conversations can grow into discussions about Purgatory and Hell, judgement and salvation, and the resurrection of the dead.

Additionally, something as simple as a jack-o-lantern becomes a great opportunity to teach my children the Gospel. As the book My Happy Pumpkin (seriously a great resource if you have little kids!) puts it, we pick out a special pumpkin, clean out the goop inside, and let the light shine - sounds like a conversion story to me! Whether the carving is a smiling face or a scary image we can discuss how the candle is like Christ in our lives, shining out and overcoming the darkness.

In our home some costumes will be off-limits, but that doesn’t mean my kids are stuck being football players or princesses for the rest of their lives. Halloween, as the eve of All Hallows Day, is a great opportunity to talk about the communion of saints and we will probably find some good costume ideas from them. I don’t think we should do gore for gore’s sake, but I also think that, in this circumstance, there’s nothing wrong with a little blood. The martyrs died for their love of Christ. What a great thing to remind ourselves of as we traipse across the neighborhood.

So maybe we’ll take a white sheet, edge it with blue sharpie and send Mother Teresa out to get candy. But we might wrap someone up in white rags or toilet paper - not as a mummy - but as Lazarus. Maybe someone will be Padre Pio, with a black eye from being beat up by satan and hands marked with the stigmata. I can cover one of my boys in arrows, maybe with some blood dripping from the wounds, and wa-la - St. Sebastian! If I have a budding make-up artist in one of my kids they could create a wound on my daughter’s neck and she could be St. Cecilia. If you think this is weird I would like to remind you that images of St. Agatha show her carrying her breasts on a plate.

We’re Catholics, folks. We own weird, bizarre, and even slightly creepy. We reverence bone-y relics, we do exorcisms, we have holy cards of St. Peregrine showing off his cancerous leg. We look death and evil squarely in the eyes and say, “Oh, it’s you” and roll over on our beds to go back to sleep. We do this because we know that Christ has conquered death. Mary’s heel is squashing the serpent’s head. St. Michael has satan in chains, ready to cast him into Hell.

Halloween gives us the perfect chance to talk about these very things - and not just to our children, but to our friends and neighbors. If we re-claim Halloween we can make it something fun. We can even make it something triumphant and holy. That’s so much better than a harvest party.

Special Needs Etiquette Part II

For those of you who read Part I of my interview with Teri and Amanda, Part II is now up over at Ignitum Today.

Enjoy!

Special Needs Etiquette Part II

October 19, 2012

7 quick takes

1 -Hope you're not getting tired of all my The Head and The Heart videos I've been posting..  I love this band!

2 - Speaking of music I love: I will be doing an phone interview with Audrey Assad today.  I'm so excited about it!  I asked my friend Nancy for some tips on doing an interview since she is a professional journalist.  She assured me that a little bit of gushing at the very beginning is okay so I shouldn't worry if there's a little bit of "oh-my-gosh-this-is-so-cool-I'm-such-a-big-fan" in my voice.

3 - Thursday night the kids and I were on our own since Travis had to stay late at work for parent-teacher conferences.  Dinner was supposed to be a breakfast casserole with from-scratch biscuits.  Instead we had leftover pizza, cheese cubes, a can of mandarin oranges, green beans, and bacon.  I'd say it was a good meal.

4 - We finally had a call about our house.  All I wanted to do was have him come over for dinner, show him the house, sign the contract, and send him home with a bag of my freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.  The crazy thing is that the guy has actually been in the house twice already because he's one of our town's volunteer firefighters.  So he was here the night JF was born and the night I called 911 because a lightbulb went out.

5 - What if this is true?

6 - Just a friendly reminder that this coming Sunday I'll be speaking in Dixon, IL.  If you want more information, please check out this post here.

7 - I have a new post up at Ignitum Today called "Special Needs Etiquette".  It's actually Part I or a two part article and in it I interview two friends who are the parents of special needs kids.  They answer some good questions about how to interact with their children, and others with disabilities, so that we're not all standing around awkwardly as our toddlers ask loud questions in the Target check-out line.

7 quick takes

1 - I love this.  Fact: One of my favorite rap songs is Let Me Clear My Throat.  It's just fun.

2 - I have a bunch of songs posted in my Ignitum Today article, Music to Make You Smile.  A couple are old 7QT songs but most are new.  I'm also taking song requests over there so pop on over and tell me which song you love and think I should have included in the list!

3 - Observation I made earlier in the week:  I'd never get down on my hands and knees to scrub the floor if my kids didn't spill things.  So slowly, one spot at a time, my kitchen and dining room floors will be cleaned.

4 - Big props go out to JF for surpassing all three of his siblings as best sleeper.  Monday night one of the kids wet the bed around midnight, around 3am another one came to me in wet pj's because he soaked through his diaper, and  a certain baby I know was found in her crib - happy as a clam - with an explosive diaper.  So JF, who kept it dry and contained all night, wins.

5 - Necessary picture of my super cute kids:
My Mom got Ben a tux (like a real tux) so he could play dress up in it.  He could be a night or a groom, but his favorite thing to be is Sir Topham Hatt.
6 - Pinterest reviews:
cilantro lime chicken - good
flourless chocolate brownie cookies - don't waste your time or chocolate.  Grace Patton, I pinned these off of you and I'm warning you - don't eat them!
- peanut butter chocolate chip shortbread - the links not working but trust me, you have pinned this but it is a waste of butter.  And butter is expensive.
Superfood Salad - Very yummy!

7 - I'm that mom - the one who's blogging at McDonald's while I ignore my sock-less children.  You can hate me.

Thanks, Grace, for hosting!  See you next Friday, Jen!

7 quick takes

1 - Heard this one on the radio the other day and really liked it.  Is it about John Mayer?  Does anybody know?  And why would anyone ever want to date John Mayer?

2 - I have a new post up at Ignitum Today called Building Community with Ministry.  I wrote a little list of ministries I'm familiar with that have worked really well in the parishes and areas they've been in.  If you have a ministry to add I'd love to read about it in the combox.  :)

3 - We're gearing up for a busy weekend.  Tomorrow is Ben and JF's birthday party.  It's a little nerdy how excited I am for the decorations (a real, running train track on the kitchen island!) and the cupcakes (oreos for wheels, pretzels for jovey logs!).  Tonight and tomorrow morning will be spent decorating the cupcakes, cleaning the toilets, and hanging up balloons.

3 - Sunday is the Mass of Thanksgiving for Fulton Sheen being named Venerable.  There is a whole bunch of events - a holy hour, mission rosary, the Mass, a brunch - but because we have four little kids we're only attending the Mass.  However, I'm super excited that LISA HENDEY!!!! and I will be meeting up briefly as she will be interviewing me for an article she's writing.  I'm also excited to get the chance to meet Brandon Vogt, a fellow Ignitum Today contributor, author of The Church and New Media, and an all around nice guy.

4 - Geez, I hope Brandon's not insulted that his name didn't get all caps.  BRANDON VOGT!

5 - Here's the pics of the re-arranging:
JF's crib is out of the first floor nursery.

Ben's Thomas bed and dresser.

L's bed and dresser.  Princesses and pink.

Resa's side of the room.  (Thanks for the dresser, Lisa!)

The nursery.  There's lots more floor space for playing and the changing table (on the other side of the door) is no longer the first thing you see.  By the way, you may have had that couch in 1988 as it's a hand-me-down or a hand-me-down.  It's the most awesome couch for napping ever.  Evah!
6 - Allow me to brag on myself for a moment.  Earlier this week I took down the 4th of July window clings and washed the windows.  I know, it's amazing.  You can be in awe.

7 - I should be baking or getting dressed or doing puzzles with my kids.

1 - So maybe I'm on a Walk the Moon kick right now.  I need music that will get me movin', ya know.  I got dishes to do, pancakes to flip, a Thomas train track to build in a figure 8 so that it has to include a bridge and tunnel, a baby to nurse, and a miracle boy to read From Head to Toe to for the 80 billionth time.  I'm busy, people!  I need some pep in my step.
Can you do it?  I can do it!

2 - My newest article at Ignitum Today is up.  It's called "The story of a house: one person's redemptive suffering is another's second chance."  So I broke the rule about short titles. *shrug*  Go read it!  Share it with your friends and your grandma!  She'll love it!

3 - The article is about my friends Alisha and Jude and this amazing thing that happened to them when they sold their house.  I even did an interview with Alisha for the post, which was a lot of fun, really long, and had many fun tangents - including one about gravy.

4 - I still have a cough and a sore throat from my stupid sickness.  Last week was horrible and when I went to the doctor he looked at my throat and said, "Ah, that's gross!"  Then he laughed and gave me a prescription.  I feel better in every other way but I still have this dumb cough.

5 - Travis and I love our family practitioner.  Who may or may not read this blog... I'm not sure.  (Hey, Mark, if you're reading.)  I asked him if I'd be well enough to go to my family reunion, which was last Sunday.  He said yes but that if I didn't want to go he'd write me a note.

6 - While at the family reunion I was holding Ben when one of my great aunts approached.  "Is this your son?" she asked me.  "Yes.  This is Ben," I said proudly.  She looked disappointed and confused and then told me she wanted to see the miracle baby she was reading about in the papers.  Poor Ben - she doesn't know what she was missing out on!

7 - This past week I've continued to keep a fairly low profile, mostly because of the dang cough.  The kids and I have walked to the park, had home-made pancakes for breakfast, and even done crafts. (!)  The days have been pretty smooth and I have realized that the thing that makes this possible is if I do not shower until quiet time.  Me in my pajamas until 2pm = everyone's happy.  I'm glad to know how to make it work, but I think that it's not too practical.

1 - This song is a part of the soundtrack to my childhood.  My mom had the 45 record and we'd listen to it over and over again.  I still love this song.  Do you remember it?

2 - I have a new post up at Ignitum Today called "The Kitchen Is My Mission Field".  Here's a little sample:
It’s true that there are some pretty shallow reasons why I have never gone on a mission trip.  First of all, they usually take place somewhere hot and sunny.  I hate being hot and I hate the sun.  I’m paler than Jim Gaffigan and so there’s no way I’m going to have my skin burn because I sweat off all my sunblock.  Secondly, while I have a basic knowledge of how to use power tools that does not mean I should be building anyone a home.  I can barely assemble a bookshelf from Target let alone a roof.  Lastly, I’m lazy.

Please head on over to Ignitum Today to read the rest!

3 - If you missed my interview on the Drew Mariani show you can listen to it by going to their archives here.  I was interviewed during the 3 o'clock hour on Friday, July 13.  My part starts around 3:30.  It was a lot of fun to do the interview, although as I sat and waited for them to call me I was so nervous I almost began to cry.  Some prayers to the Holy Spirit definitely helped although it still took me the first 10 minutes to work all the "um"s out.

4 - Speaking of me sharing JF's story, I have gotten a few more invites to speak at parishes and other events.  I'm really excited about this opportunity and if you are also interested please feel free to email me.  You can find my email address and some basic information on my presentation under the top right tab.

5 - We have two awesome events coming up.  The first is an annual party that reunites our friends from the St. Francis Newman Center where Travis and I met.  The second is Sr. Marie Noelle's profession of final vows with the Nashville Dominicans.  Sister and I were close friends in college but I haven't seen her since she professed first vows six years ago.  I just had to share the good news because I'm so happy to be able to do these things.  God is so good.

6 - I am not taking JF to Nashville and I feel a little worried that the nuns may be disappointed that the "miracle baby" did not come to them.  I do not want to disappoint a nun but the fear of a miserable trip courtesy of my 22 month old son is more powerful.

7 - My heart goes out to the people who were killed or injured at the shooting at the midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado.  Many prayers are being offered!

1 - So I've been listening to this song on repeat for about 3 weeks.  I hate the video, though.  The song definitely tells a story that happened in the 80's but everything is current except for the mix tape.  Seriously, do people younger than 25 even know what mix tapes are?  I don't think so.  So don't watch the dumb video, just listen to the song and appreciate all its references to songs we can all hopefully agree are great.

2 - I own this album, as in record. There's something about a record... but I can't listen to them anymore because my kids would break or scratch them, I am sure of it. I'm on Fire is probably my favorite song, closely followed by Working on the Highway. I think I have a strong association between my childhood and Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp songs. They always make me think of playing in my neighborhood, eating popsicles, and riding in the backseat of my parents grey Oldsmobile. It makes me happy.

3 - On Pinterest I saw the suggestion to take a picture of your daughter in your wedding dress so it can be displayed at her wedding. Of course the picture on Pinterest showed a little girl with styled hair and good lighting, probably sitting in a portrait studio. This is L at the end of the day, sitting on my bed. But it doesn't really matter. She looked beautiful in the dress and I was delighted when she told me she would wear it on her own wedding day. (I seriously love that dress so much that until I could no longer fit in it I would wear it around the house, talking on the phone, watching tv, whatever. Love it.)

4 - Now it's time for some cute pictures of my kids. These are a little late being posted but it's still the Season of Easter so I'm not gonna fret.

5 - Over at IGNITUM TODAY we're doing a symposium on Mercy and Killing, which grew out of an email exchange about mercy killing.  You can check out my post, Black and White for the Shades of Grey.  It took me a long time to gather my thoughts and write the essay.  I feel like the tone changes and it doesn't flow, but I still hope you read it.  It's intimidating stating that mercy killing parents aren't monsters when the internet is full of people ready and willing to rip my head off for saying such a thing.

6 - It's probably really lame that I can't remember is in the US we're supposed to spell it "gray" or "grey" though it's even more lame that I didn't look it up I just decided to go with the 'e' and keep it at that.  If "grey" is the British spelling let's all just blame my concentration in British literature and call it good.

7 - Tonight my mom is keeping all three kids overnight.  In anticipation I have blown off the whole day and done nothing but feed and dress the kids at eat cookie dough.  I hope you're gonna do something fun tonight!

1 - Aaahhh... boy bands...  I love this song, though I'll probably hate it by summer.  These boys are so little, like 13 year olds.  Is it silly of me that I wish NKOTB was singing this song?  Probably.  I also wish all men wore pants with the crotch in the crotch.  Ugh.

2 - Today I had a playdate with two friends whom I know from my college Newman Center days.  I hope that wherever you are you have friends like I have.  Friends who are funny, honest, thoughtful, and supportive.  Friends who love God and His Church and beer and $1 McDonald's ice cream cone bribes for good behavior.  It was a beautiful day, perfect weather at a park, a picnic lunch, 10 kids age 7 and under, and lots of good conversation.  So what if the conversations were always interrupted by a crying/whining/disobeying/tattling child?  It was perfect.

3 - I wrote a review of Hallie Lord's book Style, Sex & Substance over at IGNITUM TODAY.  Go check it out and share your opinion of the book in the combox!

4 - Have you heard the good news about iusenfp.com?  Blogger friends Katie and Kayla are building a website filled with information on natural family planning.  It doesn't matter if you practice or are interested in nfp because of your religion, because of how "green" it is, because of infertility issues - there will be helpful resources and support.  They will include sympto-thermal, Creighton, NaPro Technology info, etc.  I encourage you to check them out, like them on Facebook, and snag yourself a button.
Best button ever.
5 - L's birthday is coming up in early May.  She wants a Strawberry Shortcake birthday party which means I've been pinning things.  The funny thing is that there are four versions of Strawberry Shortcake.
The one on the left, who I loved as a little girl, L doesn't love. The one on the far right L does not love, and I'm glad about that because she's a little too mature for me - not as sweet, cute, and little for my almost 4 year old.  The Strawberry in the middle was revamped with longer hair and uglier clothes before she morphed into the one on the right.  It's the Strawberry in the middle that L loves - she's all about "working together" and "friendship".  I can live with that.

6 - Speaking of Pinterest:

Why does everyone seem to want to put everything in a mason jar?  I wonder if this mostly appeals to people who don't otherwise eat food out of mason jars.  But since my mom has canned food and grape juice my whole life, and taught me once though I haven't tried it again, it's not cute and novel for me to eat food from one.  In fact, I always look at these things and think about what a pain in the butt it would be to prep the jar, bake the food in the jar, eat out of the jar, and then wash the jar again.  But maybe I'm just lazy.

7 - Actually, I am lazy.  There's no way I would dye my cake batter 5 different colors and take the time to pour a little of each into a kabillion jars.  Or even one cake pan.
